A BRAND NEW LIFE

I was getting up to make sure that Paul was getting up for work when I received a text (7:56am) from Sarah that she was in labor and on her way to Scripps in Encinitas. About two minutes later I receive a text from Kyle that they are on their way to the hospital and to please pray. A few hours later I receive a text that says that Sarah is about half-way there and a few hours after that a text that says the baby will be born in about an hour.

Joshua Kyle Iwasaki made his way into the world today, 7/11, at 12:02pm So Cal time so it was two hours later here in Kansas City. I was so happy to hear that Kelley and Becca were in the birthing room with Sarah and took lots of pictures. Bee has posted five of them on her facebook site. She went to a drug store and has made a copy of many more pictures and will be taking them to church tomorrow and then is sending them on to us. I can hardly wait until I get those pix and hope they will be here by this coming Wednesday!

It was fun texting Paul while he was at work at Worlds of Fun although he couldn't respond until he got off work this afternoon about 4:30pm. Heather called me back a few hours ago. She had been in an area of Springfield, Missouri that didn't get good reception so nothing came through until she went more North.

How exciting for Joshua Kyle to be born into families that provide so many aunts and uncles! A total of ten aunts & uncles to dote and appreciate him. Lucky little guy to be the first-born grandchild on both sides of the family.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES !

It has just been a bit over 24 hours since Kelley and Chris called to announce that they are engaged! It was so fun to hear her describe her entire day and how she passed her green belt for Tai Kwon Do and took her last midterm. They celebrated by going to the top of Mr. A's in downtown San Diego. It overlooks the harbor and you can see the large planes landing at the airport. I am hoping that Kelley will take the time to put pen to paper and share her special night with all of us. She is such a great writer and very detailed ...... which appeals to me.

Due to scheduling around early education classes and Chris' new job they are having a wedding at their church on Sunday, August 16th. Yes, just a short 6 weeks away! As more decisions are made I will share them through this journal but I am ordering four tickets no later than this Monday!

I believe that Chris and Kelley are just perfect for each other and they are so strong in their faith. I know they can weather any storms that come their way. There is great comfort in knowing that such a kind and Godly man will be Kelley's partner in life.

If you want to take a gander at them they both have several pictures on facebook. Check out Christopher White and Kelley Downing. I am so happy that Heather took many, many pictures when they came out in May for a visit.

I am taking a deep breath and plunging headlong into the preparations that I can help with from 1700 miles away. I know that won't be many but my heart is in the right place.

HALFWAY THROUGH 2009

I do check on this site at least a couple times a week but it has become rather deserted. Still, it is my favorite because it is calmer than dealing with Facebook. I tried to figure out Twitter but I find that I don't really care about it.

I have been home for a few days. A large constituency from Kansas City descended upon Canby, Oregon for this year's CYT National Improvathon. I was talking with my son last night and he commented on all the new friends he made there. I think that is the most telling tribute to CYT that is possible. It really isn't how your team placed, or didn't place, in the competition. It was about them all having a blast and appreciating the skills that so many bring to the games.

I must admit that we did get to the cool breezes of this Portland suburb just in time. My husband said that the weather was over 100 degrees and the heat index even higher. I liked to call and tease him that we were basking in 68-70 degree weather with the lovliest of breezes. It was wonderful to sleep with my window open!

It didn't take long to get in the everyday routine of living and working. It's almost like we didn't miss a step except that we have great memories that spur us on to look forward to next year. The 10th anniversary of CYT's Improvathon will be held there in San Diego and I know that the majority of areas (including expansion areas) will be participating. It will be glorious and I am excited to attend. I may just be a spectator like John and I were last year in Denver but we will be there!

Some changes in our family's lives. Kelley is taking some classes at Mira Costa Community College with the hopes of being hired on at a local preschool or YMCA. After all the time and success of dealing with customers for interior design she has returned to her first love. She was blessed to work under Wendy Cotton who was the Our Gang teacher for many years at Tri-City. Wendy went on to start her own childrens theater organization and she allowed Sarah and Kelley to work under her at Tri City so they got great teaching skills!

Becca is enjoying the last bastion of freedom with Maggie out in San Diego. Maggie returns in a few days and then Bee will get the last of her supplies needed for the cosmetology kit and begin her schooling the middle of this month. It will be an intense 10-11 months but I know this is a perfect fit for her interests and passions.

Sarah, my dear #2 daughter, is awaiting the arrival of Joshua Kyle. His due date is the same as her (and Kyle's) 2nd anniversary. My dad told me that she looks wonderful but, definitely, ready to give birth anytime now! July 7th will hold much anticipation but I won't hold my breath that Joshua will make his entrance. These sweet babies have their own time schedules.

Heather is excited to have been given a promotion at work and will be put on salary. Yay! How nice to be able to plan your financial life. She is working on finishing up her third album and is planning on it being ready before the Kansas City Ren Fest starts up on September 5th. This one will be very, very special because it has professional musicians performing on it and the editing is top-notch. Other opportunities (musical) seem to be opening up and I credit her persistence.

Paul is on his third year at Worlds of Fun. He is sitting in a good situation for a possible promotion of his own. He had a meeting with the department supervisor of games and he should get to be an assistant lead whenever the next opening happens. That could be fairly soon because employees leave to go to school in the middle of August.

John's and my 27th anniversary will be here on July 17th. I really can't believe all that time has gone by. It went so darn fast! I know we look older but I don't feel like we are really that different. We are now middle-aged and older. It doesn't seem real except that John qualifies for the senior discount at Denney's and at movie theaters. LOL!

John and I are getting in the mindset to downsize. The trappings of a big home (very needed when we moved to KC) don't hold any pull and we desire to be free of the size to clean and take care of. We just want less and that is a good thing.

We know that we are so very blessed to be a part of Avondale Baptist Church and have the great teachings of Jerry Breese. His dear wife, Karen, is one amazing pianist and the joy of life just exudes from her. They both were blessings to us during the last two visits of my parents before my mom died.

So, life is good! I loved seeing old friends from San Diego and it is great to know that we are still missed. Mostly, I miss not being around my other three children. It is hard to not be a part of all their adventures. I pray that one day we will all be close by and be able to be a part of each others lives.

I am signing off praying that you all know how much I love you and praise God for your involvement with me and my family.

HAPPY 2009 !!!!!

I have been beyond remiss about posting on xanga and I still prefer this site as it is easy to maneuver.

My love and best wishes to all who read this. 2009 will prove to be a momentous year for the Downing family. Lots of growth. Lots of changes. Lots of new experiences allowing opportunities. A new life will be joining us during the summer and that is a very new experience.

Please pray for us and know that we do the same for you. You may not even know that you are in our thoughts and prayers ...... but you are!!!

IMPROVATHON - DENVER JULY '08

I want to tell you that we (Downings) placed 2nd and 1st. Third place went to Vancouver and I was so pleased because I remembered Sydney Farley (a girl) from 2 years ago and she has just gotten better and better. I visited CYT Vancouver when they just opened and supported my friend, Beka Hardt, who went there to plant the area and direct "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" about four years ago. Second place went to Becca and the San DiegoTri-City team "The Good, the Plaid and the Funny" and 1st place went to our own KC North "The Spurs of the Moment" !!!!!!

These kids had been working hard and just praying that they would be placed in the varsity "A" team and they got it. I was a parent judge on Thursday afternoon/evening for Emotional Quadrant and got to see every single team that came, rate them on several factors and choose a "superstar/all star" from each team. Of course, I just watched and abstained when my kids performed. I was very proud of them and so proud of all the teams. It was great to see some returning kids that I remember from two years ago (the AD decided that we wouldn't participate last year) when Kansas City hosted. Such improvement and everyone gave it their best so you can't ask for more.

Byron Huskey and Derrick Collins videotaped the entire competition (all teams) and went with KC North to each game played. I think Byron and Derrick must have traded off in order to get all the teams. There will be a 2 disc dvd set offered for anyone that would like a copy. I am pretty sure that we will have a fundraising night and our winning team will perform their opening introduction besides seeing the dvd. We would like to bless next year's team with the seed money since the competition will be held in San Diego.

Many thanks to Kendrick Martin and Ben Auxier for their supurb coaching and to Byron Huskey (our coach at the last Improvathon that KC North won) for his input and suggestions to the team. With these three guys at the helm the kids just had to do well!

I know the team just wanted to be in the varsity and really didn't expect to win but they sure were strong and all that hard work and nightly practices paid off. Dylan Glenn won the "all star" award for the team and you should have seen him. I have never seen such funny actions from him before. It is so hard to just get something thrown at you and then immediately get into the groove and entertain the audience. Ask him to tell you about the time he was the spaceship twirling around with his two astronauts, Bethany and Paul. It was so hilarious!!!

It was so funny that as soon as the kids learned they won Byron was on the cell phone to Heather and she was talking to Paul within a minute of winning! I called my daughters, Sarah and Kelley, and then I called Mrs. Reiser. I had been texting her and then I called and left a message. I must have sounded practically hysterical with Becca's team taking second and Paul's taking first. It was so joyful to see Becca thrilled to death for Paul and jump on him when they ran up on stage. You just had to be there!
